What do you do in a car accident from car rental company Tribecar?

 A person recently got into an accident in a TribeCar and she shared that she had to pay $10,650.

1. Excess for SNT7119A - $5450
2. Repair for SNT7119A - $4600
3. Loss of use - $600 (Supposedly billed at $95 a day excluding GST, effectively $103.55 per day)



Was the amount of $10,650 justifiable?

Chapter 1

The person was driving her rental car under TribeCar when she met in an accident on the 30th December 2025 0130am. The person takes full responsibilty as the accident was caused by her carelessness.

She was merging into the expressway but misjudged the turn and caused another car to crash into her vehicle.


Chapter 2

After recovering from the sudden shock, she reached out to TribeCar via the emergency hotline on the app. The person who picked up the call seemed to be a Filipino lady.

She was instructed to email the pictures of the damages to support@tribecar.com (since the app does not support users uploading photos of damages after a car accident).

She was also asked to extend the car rental for another 18 hours (from 2am till 8pm the same day). TribeCar will then arrange for the car to be towed to an authorised TribeCar workshop (KY Auto PTE LTD).

She was then redirected to ask TribeCar about the insurance details (Is the TribeCar emergency support not a representative from Tribecar?)

This is when she had to reach out to TribeCar's enforcement representative for the insurance details.


Chapter 3

TribeCar's enforcement representative then told the person that she had to file a GIA (General Insurance Association of Singapore) report within 24 hours. The reporting centre was the same as the authorised TribeCar workshop at KY Auto Pte Ltd. 

When filing the GIA report, the case was classified under "Reporting only" in the claim under insurance policy for repairs to the vehicle.

Rent Now Leasing  provide KY Auto Pte Ltd the initial amount of $10,950 to be paid (of which 80% would be reimbursed to the person)

1. Excess fo SNT7119A - $5450
2. Repair for SNT7119A - $4800
3. Loss of use - $700

p.s. Rent Now Leasing appears to be the primary car rental company (A car company that provides care to TribeCar).


Which is strange to the person as the leasing compay is giving the quotation to the car repair company.

The person asked KY Auto Pte Ltd to provide an itemized breakdown of the repair cost but was refused as the repairs are calculated as a package.

After which, KY Auto Pte Ltd redirected to the person to talk to a representative from Rent Now Leasing for further negotiations. However, Rent Now Leasing refused to lower or increase the cost of repairs, even instructing KY Auto Pte Ltd not to give in.



Chapter 4

The person paid for TribeShield, an optional add on coverage to your booking which protects you from excessive financial losses in the event of an accident.

However, she will not be entitled to be reimbursed any money for the repairs since

  1. The cost of her repairs did not exceed $5,450
  2. The company chose to not to activate their motor insurance. 

Final Thoughts

If you ever get into an accident, this is what you should do.

  1. Life is more important than money. Check that the other party is still safe and did not sustain any major injuries from the accident. If so, call an ambulance first. 
  2. Exchange contact details so that you still can communicate in future if required.
  3. Contact the rental company, in this case TribeCar for further action.

Exercise Starlight - It was so underwhelming :/

Exercise Starlight (17th Aug - 7th Sep) Yay so I'm finally back from Taiwan/Republic of China. Singapore's quite a mess though, with elections going on and the annual haze issue *coughs*. 9SIR and it's draining deployments

It's been 4 days since the end of deployment, and I'm really glad it's over. I don't think I can reveal much regarding its operations but I believe this unit deserves more credit than it is given.  9SIR is under 2PDF, and we specialise in POI for civilian key installations i.e. Changi Airport and Jurong Island. This also means that we play a part in protecting Singapore's shores, 24/7. The POI duty lasts for a month, and the next one begins a few weeks after we end, and so on. There are also 4 rotations per duty, with 2 platoons on duty and the last platoon on off. Each rotation consists 2 night shifts, 1 day of LQRF and 2 day shifts (T=4.25 days), followed by 1.75 days off.  So, I got to sit in a tower for 3 out of 4 weeks and get driven around for 80-100km per day.  One of the weeks, I would have to stay near the entrance of JGL to assist in any incidents.
